Drama Discovery is offered with three age groupings as a Waymakers hour-long weekly Deep Dive. Sessions draw on a range of approaches, including storytelling, role-play, improvisation, movement, games and collaborative theatre-making. Groups are led by Barry Evans, who has worked in drama education and the home education community for many years and is also our Curiosity Hub lead facilitator.
Rather than focusing solely on performance, the groups explore creativity, communication, imagination and connection through shared dramatic play. Participation can look very different from child to child: some enjoy performing, others prefer storytelling, observation, movement or collaborative world-building.
Groups are broadly organised by age, experience and social dynamic, while recognising that children develop and participate in different ways. Sessions usually begin with a shared “news” time, helping to build trust, confidence and connection within the group before activities begin.
The youngest group (ages 5-9) focuses on imaginative play, movement, storytelling and sensory exploration, helping children become comfortable within a supportive group environment.
The middle group (ages 9-12) develops collaboration, communication and creative decision-making through improvisation, role-play, character work and theatrical techniques, with growing emphasis on consent, cooperation and understanding different perspectives.
The older group (ages 13+) offers space for deeper creative exploration, discussion and ensemble work, with opportunities to explore more complex themes, relationships and ideas through drama. Across all groups, the emphasis remains on curiosity, creativity, collaboration and shared experience rather than polished performance. More detailed information about the groups available here.
