Waymakers is led by a team of educators, parents and facilitators brought together by a shared belief that children learn best through autonomy, connection, creativity and trust.

Our Co-founders and Directors

Helen and Kristy have both been home educating in Cambridge since 2015, drawing on backgrounds in teaching, early years education, educational research and play therapy to create spaces where children and young people can explore their interests in ways that honour neurodiversity, wellbeing and individual development.

Helen’s work in the home education community, education policy and democratic education, alongside Kristy’s experience supporting families through community groups and child-led learning spaces, shapes the collaborative ethos at the heart of Waymakers.

Our facilitators

Alongside them is Barry, a long-standing and much-loved figure within the Cambridge home education community, whose drama work over more than two decades has helped hundreds of children grow in confidence, creativity and connection. His approach centres on valuing every child’s voice and creating welcoming, collaborative environments where young people can thrive socially as well as creatively.

Charlotte and Sarah bring further depth to the team through their experience in both formal education and alternative learning approaches. Charlotte, a home educator, experienced secondary English teacher and life coach, combines academic support with a strong commitment to consent-based, self-directed education and community building. Sarah, a qualified early years teacher and home educating parent, is passionate about creating nurturing environments where children feel safe, heard and inspired to learn naturally through play, relationships and curiosity.

Together, the team brings a rich blend of professional expertise, lived experience and shared values to support families seeking more flexible, compassionate and child-centred approaches to learning.

We also work with many other ad hoc volunteers, in-person and online facilitators.
