What do I and others need?

Whilst forging our paths and shaping our world, we and others we meet along the way have a whole range of wants and needs to negotiate. At Waymakers we support young people to exercise their agency peacefully.

Our Approach

The guiding values below help everyone involved in Waymakers to create the conditions in which children can identify and explore their interests.

Playfulness, freedom & trust

Children learn best when they are engaged, curious and having fun. At Waymakers, we honour each other’s interests, boundaries and pace, creating space for exploration, experimentation and joyful learning.

Flexibility & inclusion

We aim to create welcoming, neurodiversity-affirming environments that support a wide range of backgrounds, abilities and ways of engaging. We recognise the diverse rhythms of home education and offer flexible approaches that work alongside family life.

Compassion, consent & creativity

We encourage both children and adults to develop the Waymakers habit of asking, “What do I and others need?” By balancing our own needs with the needs of others, we create environments where imagination, collaboration and co-creation can thrive.

Communication & collaboration

Waymakers is built on mutual support between families, facilitators and young people. We value open, respectful communication and shared responsibility for supporting wellbeing, access and participation in ways that work for each child.

Community & character

We foster connected relationships across ages and roles, supporting young people to develop confidence, self-awareness, values and positive ways of relating to others.

Agency, mastery & critical thinking

Learners are empowered to build meaningful educational pathways as part of their wider home education journeys, developing the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to navigate a rapidly changing world.
