Our Story

Group of children and an adult sitting on the floor in a circle, engaging in conversation.

We are not a school or childcare provider but a learning collective making it easier for home educating and flexi-schooling families to come together in shared spaces to supplement home education.

Children playing at a park

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, home education (child-led) is different to home-schooling (curriculum-led) but whichever is being pursued, parents are responsible for providing a suitable education for their children, which we passionately believe should be led by the interests of young people.

The Directors, Helen and Kristy, have been home educating in Cambridge since 2015.

Our journey started at a home ed meet up when our children were tiny and has evolved into an example of how education really doesn’t have to mean school.

Three young girls playing and having fun outdoors on green grass, with a wooden fence, bicycle, and a person in the background. One girl is wearing a floral dress and pink sneakers, while the other two are in patterned leggings and sneakers.

We are not alone in our thinking…

“In my recent book, Rewilding Education, I talk about the need for education systems around the world to provide an ecosystem of learning opportunities rather than a one-size-fits-all approach in schools. Waymakers is a welcome step in this direction, with young people taking responsibility for themselves as creative, dynamic, collaborative learners. I wish all young people had this opportunity to thrive and learn in authentic settings, and to prepare for a future that will look nothing like our recent past.”
