Things of interest

On this page, in no particular order, we are collating useful links that we, our facilitators and other home educators felt might interest the Waymakers community. We have not checked them all in detail but have included those we thought might be of interest. If you'd like to submit one, please email us a link and brief description of why you like it or want to promote it and we'd love to share it here for you.

Mont21 Hub
Home ed sessions Wednesday mornings in Eddington with academic focus run by Waymakers' facilitator Soizic.

Changers
"Owner is dad to a PDAer. They're great, my son enjoys his weekly sessions with his mentor!"

Short Breaks Funding
Many home educated children may be eligible for Short Breaks Funding worth up to £2000 a year. The funding can be used for accessing Waymakers activities (except signposted direct education or therapy services not delivered directly through Waymakers).

It is for children and young people to develop the skills to prepare for adulthood, to access community activities and to increase independence skills.

Picture
This is achieved through an allocation of a personal budget that can be used for agreed activities or support which also provides carers with a short break. This could take the form of paying for 1-2-1 support to accompany children when accessing activities and/or paying for the activities themselves that are facilitator-led. You can call 0345 045 5203 to ask for an eligibility assessment for short break funding and children in receipt of Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payments have automatic entitlement and can be accessed through self-referral.

The PDA Society
"Great resource for understanding Pathological Demand Avoidance with knowledgeable and experienced parents on hand offering support."
The £2 Tuition Hub
"Makes it feel affordable to follow interests with live or pre-recorded online lessons."

The Cabin and The Lodge
"Leading the way in what consent-based education can look like."
The Family Enrichment Hub
"Loads of fairly priced online workshops and courses with a focus on following interests/passions, emotional health and nature."
Whatsapp groups
The Cambridge Home Ed Whatsapp community has lots of groups available to join (links not included here to prevent spammers) - just reaching out to one local home ed family to add you to one of the groups will get you into the wider Whatsapp community too. Here are some to look out for which we feel are either just really handy to know about or particularly chime with Waymakers values:
  • 121 social group for SEND and anxious home ed children (a lovely gentle way in to meeting other families)
  • Age-specific groups; under 5s, 0-7s, 7-12s, 13+, Teen park meets (tends to be more group activities)
  • Orchard Park group (for parents with children attending regular activities at Orchard Park on Wednesdays)
  • Junior Apprentices (project based learning led by a consent-based aware facilitator and home educator)
  • Multisports (take place at the Meadows on Monday where drama and Spanish also happen)
  • Project fair (monthly group where children choose how to interpret a theme and share what they've done exhibition style
  • Neighbourhood-specific groups (different areas and neighbourhoods so people can find other home educators close by)
